1/16/2024 0 Comments Online music compositions lessonsNot just from talking about my works, but also listening to other people's and seeing my teacher work with them too. In the first piece I did for the class I ended up taking I feel like I learned more than I did in the entire time period prior. And I felt for awhile I was just flailing around. So I might as well have just been reading a textbook. Either stuff I already knew or formulaic or otherwise unhelpful bits of info. But I found like you did, that I was just flailing around with these online courses. When I first started to take composition more seriously I had already had.very many years.of musical education. These not only tend to be more rigorous, but they are also often able to give you real players to perform your pieces and introduce you to an in person community, which can be invaluable. There are places that have continuing ed or other forms of Composition classes you can take without being a major or matriculated. I don't know where you are in the world, but looking for composition classes at universities or music schools would be my best suggestion. I agree with you that a lot of the classes floating around on the internet are just a money grab or the same basic information you can get anywhere else. If anyone has suggestions (youtube, paid courses, whatever), I'd be really grateful. My compositions tend to end up mainly root position Major/Minor with predictable cadences, and any attempt I make to expand beyond that becomes either bland sounding, or painfully dissonant, and not in a fun serialist way.ĭoes anyone have a good composition course that they'd recommend? Something that will at least give a few starting points on how to make my music more interesting to hear? I'm okay with having to work out any points of theory that I'm not great with, but the 'beginner learn to compose' classes seem to be a money-grab, and aimed at a more basic level than I'm currently at in regards to theory etc. When it gets to that point, I always run into some trouble. My musical tastes are really eclectic, everything from Early Music to Folk to Contemporary 'Classical' and a ton of things in between.īut what I'd like to be doing is actual composition, either in traditional 'Classical' pieces, or possibly some scorewriting. I've been a musician (rock guitar, classical guitar, some cello, some bass, some lute) for a good while and have a decent understanding of music theory (good with voice leading, understanding chords/keys, etc).
